A NOTE FROM OUR CHAPLAIN, Janis Godby

A NOTE FROM OUR CHAPLAIN, Janis Godby

HEALTH & WELLNESS are two words we very commonly hear spoken together as we focus on taking good care of ourselves. When we think of health, we typically first think of our physical well being, in that if our bodies are functioning properly, we are healthy. But we are all learning that wellness is more than just being free from illness. We know now that there are 5 main aspects of personal health: physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and intellectual. In order to be considered “well” it is important to make sure none of these areas are neglected.

BODY, SOUL & SPIRIT Of course, even before these new terms and definitions of health, we know that we have each been created with a body, a soul, and a spirit. We take good care of our bodies when we eat healthy foods and exercise; we take care of our minds as we challenge ourselves to keep learning and doing mind stimulating activities; we maintain good health emotionally and socially as we engage with other people instead of choosing to stay alone…but above all of these good choices for health, is the spiritual aspect of who we are. When we come to Christ, our spirit is joined with the Holy Spirit and our bodies become His dwelling place. Because of the Holy Spirit, the spiritual part of who we are becomes the most important part because it is how we are able to interact with God. He knows us intimately and knows what is best for us…He heals us and helps us live out each day in His mighty strength. Just as scripture says, “We live and move and have our being in Him.” Acts 17:28

Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. And these choices continue to be very important all throughout the different stages of our lives. Let’s all continue to recognize the importance of staying close to God, depending on His help us make these good choices, because our relationship with God is the ultimate definition of good health! – Janis
